Present at the festival Lumière in Lyon (until 21 October), the american film director Peter Bogdanovich, soon to be octogenarian, has not been able to honour all its obligations as a result of an accidental fall which resulted in her hospitalization. Cruel irony of fate, at a time when a tribute saluted a career itself very rugged. Figure known to the International cinéphilique, Peter Bogdanovich remains poorly identified by the general public.
In France, a generation of spectators has, without doubt, the memory of The Last session, the ciné-club dedicated to the american cinema and animated by Eddy Mitchell on France 3 from 1982 to 1998, without necessarily making the link with Bogdanovich. The title of the issue takes yet a song of Eddy Mitchell which itself refers back to the title of a film signed by the director in 1971, The last picture show. Movie, song and emission bathe in the nostalgia of a classic cinema and popular endangered.
Unlike his contemporaries in the New Hollywood (Scorsese, Coppola, De Palma…), Peter Bogdanovich, who was not yet 30 years old in 1970, do not dream of overthrowing the table
The death of the classical cinema, this sense of inevitable loss, is the great case of Peter Bogdanovich, who was not yet 30 years old in 1970, but unlike his contemporaries in the New Hollywood (Scorsese, Coppola, De Palma, Spielberg…), do not dream of overthrowing the table. Two generations talk, and without speaking, with the exception of Bogdanovich, who is the first not only to meet and to celebrate the great masters of the classical hollywood but to register in their wake.
The Light Festival, as well as a strong news editorial, bring up this singular character, whose life seems to do a body with the history of the cinema and whose purpose of existence has been to celebrate by all the means at its disposal, the great age of this dreamed world.
